چکیده
In this paper we try to dynamically constrain the quadrupole mass moment Q of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1909-3744, which has a white dwarf as companion, from deviations of the third Kepler law. By determining the pulsar’s mass mp from the general relativistic expression of the phenomenologically determined post-Keplerian parameter s, we get Q = (−0.1 ± 1.3) × 10 kg m which is compatible with zero and with the values found in literature. Instead, for mp = (1.34± 0.5)M⊙, which is incompatible with general relativity by hundreds of sigma, Q would assume values incompatible with zero at 1-2.6 sigma, but largely different from the commonly accepted figures for it.

Attempts to dynamically constrain the quadrupole mass moment of millisecond pulsars
In this paper we try to dynamically constrain the quadrupole mass moment Q of the millisecond PSR B1257+12 pulsar from the orbital periods of its three planets, assumed to be in equatorial and circular orbits. Given the present-day accuracy in knowing their ephemerides, no post-Newtonian corrections to their motions are required. By conservatively assuming 1% and 10% uncertainties in the pulsar...

متن کاملPSR J1909−3744, a Binary Millisecond Pulsar with a Very Small Duty Cycle
We report the discovery of PSR J1909−3744, a 2.95 millisecond pulsar in a nearly circular 1.53 day orbit. Its narrow pulse width of 43 μs allows pulse arrival times to be determined with great accuracy. We have spectroscopically identified the companion as a moderately hot (T ≈ 8500K) white dwarf with strong absorption lines. Radial velocity measurements of the companion will yield the mass rat...
متن کاملThe Mass of a Millisecond Pulsar
We report on nearly two years of timing observations of the low-mass binary millisecond pulsar, PSR J1909−3744 with the Caltech-Parkes-Swinburne Recorder II (CPSR2), a new instrument that gives unprecedented timing precision. Daily observations give a weighted rms residual of 74 ns, indicating an extremely low level of systematic error. We have greatly improved upon the previous parallax and pr...
متن کاملLimitations in timing precision due to single-pulse shape variability in millisecond pulsars
High-sensitivity radio-frequency observations of millisecond pulsars usually show stochastic, broad-band, pulse-shape variations intrinsic to the pulsar emission process. These variations induce jitter noise in pulsar timing observations; understanding the properties of this noise is of particular importance for the effort to detect gravitational waves with pulsar timing arrays. We assess the s...
